Why children forget what they memorize (and remember what they understand)
Most parents have seen it happen. A child revises a chapter the night before a test, repeats the definitions back perfectly, and a week later cannot recall a word of it. The effort was real. So why did it disappear?
A definition is not understanding
Take a sentence every Class 7 student meets: “Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make food using sunlight.” A child can recite that and still have no picture in their head of what is happening. Ask them why a plant kept in a dark cupboard dies, and the recited line does not help them.
Now teach it the other way. Start with the question: where does the wood in a tree come from? It is not from the soil, because the soil level barely drops as a tree grows. It comes, strangely, from the air and from water, rearranged using the energy in sunlight. A child who has sat with that idea does not need to memorize the definition. They can rebuild it themselves, because they understand the thing it describes.
Why this shows up in board marks
Boards have steadily moved away from questions that reward pure recall. More marks now sit in application: a situation the child has not seen before, where they have to use a concept rather than repeat it. A student who memorized cannot do this. A student who understood can, because understanding travels to new problems and memorized lines do not.
This is also why a strong student can have a bad week and still recover. Their knowledge is not balanced on memory that decays. It is built on ideas that hold.
What this looks like day to day
In our classes, a chapter does not begin with the definition. It begins with the why: why this idea exists, where it shows up in the real world, what problem it solves. Practice comes after the idea is clear, not before. When a child gets a question wrong, we trace it back to the concept underneath rather than asking them to revise the page again.
It is slower at the start. It is far faster by the exam, because nothing has to be re-learned.
