Play school vs nursery vs LKG vs UKG: a parent's glossary

The names change from one school to the next, which makes a confusing time more confusing. Here is what the stages usually mean, what each one is actually for, and roughly what age fits each.

The stages, in plain language

Play school / Pre-Nursery (about 2.5 to 3 years). The first step into a structured space outside home. The real work here is not letters or numbers. It is comfort, language, and confidence: settling into a routine, being around other children, and learning that a space away from a parent is safe and warm.

Nursery (about 3 to 4 years). Pre-reading and pre-number skills through activity, not worksheets. Recognizing letters and sounds, counting in context, rhymes, and a lot of hands-on play that the child actually remembers because they did it rather than copied it.

LKG, Lower Kindergarten (about 4 to 5 years). Language begins to firm up, in English and in Hindi. Early writing, reading readiness, drawing, and first steps into simple ideas about the world.

UKG, Upper Kindergarten (about 5 to 6 years). This stage has one honest job: getting a child ready for Class 1. Structured writing, reading with growing fluency, number sense, and the habit that matters most of all, raising a hand to ask a question.

The age ranges are guides, not rules

Children do not develop on a fixed timetable. A child a few months either side of these ranges is completely normal. What matters far more than hitting a stage early is whether the stage fits the child in front of you. Pushing a child into formal writing before they are ready does not buy a head start; it usually buys a dislike of writing.

What to look for, whatever it is called

Because the labels vary, judge the place, not the name. A few honest questions cut through it:

• How many children are in a group, and how many adults?
• Does the day involve play and movement, or mostly sitting and copying?
• Does my child need to already know letters or numbers to join? (A good early-years setting will say no.)
• Is it a dedicated space, or a room in a home?
